In case you ever wondered where that saying came from, it was coined by Mies van der Rohe, the famous architect and furniture designer. It also seems to be the word on the street right now as I talk with friends and attend groups I’m a member of. Maybe it’s typical of the time of year and the whole New Year’s cleansing, but I think the economy has also pushed us toward the feeling that many of us have acquired too much ‘stuff’. The downturn was preceded by an era of ‘winner has the latest and coolest gadgets’. I know from experience that Clients were looking for unique and expensive toys including built-in coffee centers, six-bottle wine taps, free-standing ice-makers, heated walkways that melt snow, etc. I don’t see the trend for costly gadgets that make our lives simpler dying out. We definitely are working toward low to no maintenance living, which has to be a good thing as busy as we all seem to be.

What I do see happening with many of us is purging our homes of the knick-knacks and froo-froo that really have no importance to us and seem to be taking up precious space. Several of my friends and Clients have mentioned they are doing a major clean-out of their home and enjoying their new found empty cabinets and open shelves. They almost feel like they’ve shed those unwanted holiday pounds. And the non-profit groups who gain from their bags and bags of cleansing are in turn offering these items up for people who are really hurting during the downturn. A win-win? Maybe. But I do know these folks are sensing that having less ‘stuff’ just feels right.

Hello World!

Frankly I never thought I’d be here. In fact I have fought technology pretty hard and resisted, nay, even bad-mouthed blogging, Facebook, tweeting, etc. It was not until I spent a couple of days at the Designer’s Market at the Denver Design Center watching all the young, up-and-coming Designers raise their hand when asked who had a website or blog. I definitely had a metamorphic experience while there and came away totally rejuvenated and ready to begin a DHID-Dawn Huckaby Interior Design makeover.

So with the help of my family and Casey and Steve with the TEN|10 Group, I’ve had a lot of fun creating the NEW me: inner + vision design, llc. It’s been a great learning experience not only about technology but about myself. Thanks so much to Steve and Casey for all of your insight and creativity and helping me see my own ‘inner vision’. Also, special thanks to my Steve for letting me bounce a gazillion ideas off him in the process, to Ty for spending an afternoon taking hundreds of photos to get just that one perfect shot, and to Hannah for giving me her two-cents from the West Coast.

It seems as a Designer, I’m rarely at my desk except to draw. Most of the time I’m in my Mini Cooper mobile office shopping for Clients. My goal with this Blog is to keep you informed and fill you in on great places around Denver for decorative items and new design styles I see while I’m running around. I hope you have fun reading it once and a while. I know I’ll have fun out and about. And if you ever see a little Pepper White Mini with ‘XXS’ on the license plate, be sure to say ‘HI’.
